— Japan Azumi: Watching Rise in Spanish Bond Yields Carefully
TOKYO (MNI) – Japanese Finance Minister Jun Azumi said on Friday
that there has been no decision as to whether Group of Seven finance
chiefs will meet by the year-end to discuss ways to stop the European
debt crisis from hurting the global economy.
He also told reporters that he is closely watching sharp rises in
Spanish government bond yields.
Azumi acknowledged that “there is talk” that top financial
policymakers from the G7 or other groups may hold a meeting toward the
end of the year but said no decision has been made yet.
“I am carefully watching” the surge in Spanish government bond
yields, he said, adding debt issued by Italy and Spain has come under
heavy selling as markets participants are “questioning political
stability” in those countries.
Yield on the Spanish 10-year government bond hit a record high near
7% in European markets on Thursday.
