TOKYO (MNI) – New vehicle sales in Japan fell for a ninth straight
month in May as the March 11 earthquake disaster continued to cripple
supply chains, according to data released by the Japan Automobile
Dealers Association on Wednesday.

New vehicle sales fell 37.8% last month from a year earlier to
142,154 units, but sales drop narrowed from -51.0% in April, which was
the biggest single-month decline on record.

The association began compiling automobile sales data in
comparative form in January 1969.

New vehicle sales also fell 14.3% y/y in February, 21.5% in
January, 28.3% in December, 30.7% in November, 26.7% in October and 4.1%
in September 2010.

Separately, the Japan Mini Vehicle Association reported that
domestic sales of new small vehicles (with engine displacement of less
than 660 cc) fell by 25.4% y/y to 95,210 in May, the eighth straight
drop, following a 41.1% decline in April.
