TOKYO (MNI) – Auto industry vehicle output in November fell 6.7%
from a year earlier to 802,009 units, the second straight monthly fall,
data from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association showed on
Monday.
Passenger car output tumbled 8.2% to 689,808 vehicles, a second
consecutive month of declines, while truck output rose 3.3% to 101,853
vehicles, the 12th straight monthly rise.
Bus production increased 11.7% to 10,348 units, the second straight
monthly rise.
Domestic vehicle shipments dropped 25.9% to 323,600 units in
November, while exports rose 9.6% to 432,585 units, up for the 11th
consecutive month.
Japanese automakers continued to cut their output as they faced a
sharp downturn in domestic demand after the government in September
ended its subsidies for low emission vehicle purchases.
Toyota Motor Corp said last week it cut domestic output of Toyota-
and Lexus-brand cars by 19.5% in November from a year earlier, the third
straight month of reduced production.
New vehicle sales in Japan fell 30.7% from a year earlier to
203,246 units in November, the third consecutive y/y fall, the latest
data from the Japan Automobile Dealers Association showed.
Monthly vehicle output tumbled to as low as 481,349 units in
February 2009 following the collapse of the U.S. investment bank Lehman
Brothers in September 2008.
