Comments by Japanese economy minister, Toshimitsu Motegi, in parliament

  • Currency issue will be discussed by finance minister
  • "Trade issues will be discussed by myself and Lighthizer"

Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, is also chipping in as he says that he and Trump have agreed not to talk about currencies specifically. Abe goes on to say that currency discussion is part of the finance ministry's jurisdiction instead.

With all the talk about the Chinese yuan's involvement in trade talks between US and China, Japan is surely worried that their talks with the US will follow a similar path. If the Japanese yen were to strengthen rather than weaken from political pressures, it would mean that the government and central bank will find it more difficult to meet its 2% inflation target.
