  • Does not share opinion that a German cannot become ECB president
  • Says that Weidmann is a 'convinced European and experienced central banker'
  • Notes that Weidmann is a suitable candidate to take over from Draghi

There's still a degree of uncertainty looming over who will succeed outgoing ECB president Mario Draghi later this year. As it stands, I reckon the favourites are Weidmann and Finland's Olli Rehn. Weidmann's candidacy is the big wildcard factor in all of this as it would depend on how pushy Germany is in trying to contest for Juncker's own position as European Commission president.
