Anything is possible with Trump and China

Trump has sent three top officials -- Mnuchi, Ross and Lighthizer -- to China to talk trade with top Chinese officials.

The tone of public remarks lately has been poor, with China sounding a defiant tone that's popular at home and Trump playing a similar game.

The FT takes a closer look at the talks.

The risk is that Trump sends an inflammatory tweet or that there is some kind of negative spat. On the flipside, any improvement in tone would be an improvement for markets.

"The best that can be hoped for from this week's meetings is a de-escalation of tensions and an agreement on the scope of further negotiations," said Eswar Prasad, a Cornell University professor and former head of the International Monetary Fund's China division.
