Sir Linday Hoyle defeats Chris Bryant to become the Speaker of the House of Commons

Sir Lindsay Hoyle has defeated Chris Bryant in the 4th vote for the Speaker of the House of Commons. Hoyle succeeds Speak John Bercow who resided in the speaker chair for 10 years.

The final vote showed:

  • Hoyle 325 votes
  • Bryant 212 votes.
Hoyle

Hoyle, 62, was the son of a former Labour MP Doug Hoyle. In 1997 he was chosen to stand as the labor candidate for the Chorley constituency and won the seat. He became the 1st Labour MP for Chorley in 18 years.

Hoyle was elected chairman of Ways and Means and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons on 8 June 2010.

Hoyle is married to Catherine's Swindley. He was previously married to Lynda Anne Fowler and had two daughters, Emma and Natalie. Natalied died in December 2017 at the age of 28.
