EU working group meeting on Greece has ended
There are opposing reports on the EU meeting to prepare the response to Greece's request for a bailout extension.
MNI reports that Eurogroup officials have drafted a statement that could well serve as a basis for a compromise between Greece and Eurozone. Separately, a German TV reporter is saying there is some strife and EU leaders are struggling to get on the same page.
Details are sketchy at the moment but should be filtering through imminently.
Update:
Another German press report that the Eurogroup-Working Group ended after 7 hours without a result, citing sources.
Update 2:
...and right after that there is a report citing Greek officials that says a 'principal agreement' has been reached at the Eurogroup Working Group.
Update 3 the MNI story is online.
The positions of Greece and the Eurozone over future financing for Athens moved much closer at a meeting of finance ministry deputies in Brussels, three sources with knowledge of the discussions told Euro Insight Thursday.
One source, a veteran Eurozone official, said, "positions seem to be reasonably close."
The deputies are "close to an agreement but (it is) subject to political discussion," a second source with knowledge of the talks said.
Generally, I'd go with MNI in these situations and they've had generally great sources in the Greek drama but they've had a few misses too. Cautiously long EUR but I still expect the Germans to throw up some roadblocks.
