Comments by European budget commissioner Pierre Moscovici

  • Says it is in everyone's interests to reach an agreement

The optimism that surrounds the meeting between himself and Italy's government will no doubt help to settle some nerves but when Salvini is making comments like this, I just don't see how they can come to an agreement unless either side offers some concessions.

Italy's populist government isn't willing to budge as they fear it will mean breaking their election promises to the people. Meanwhile, the European Commission can't let up as they would otherwise face the wrath of other members in the region. It's very much a case of an unstoppable force heading for a collision with an immovable object.

Who wins in such a case? Well, definitely not investors that's for sure.
