Comments from Canadian ambassador to US

"We will be having some meetings today to really sort of do an assessment of, 'where are we and is there a chance of pulling all this together in a fairly rapid fashion or not?'"

Separate meetings are planned with Mexico and Canada on whether they can get an agreement done in the short term or if "negotiations will drag on until next year."

He cited the Prime Minister who said they're "pretty close" but also was stringent in saying that a deal won't happen without resolution panels. He also emphasized that autos were very close.

"Asked about how much time negotiators had left to wrap up the talks, MacNaughton said: "It's really a function of whether or not people are going to roll up their sleeves. There's no such thing as getting it done next week or the week after that if all people are doing is restating the positions they've been stating for the last eight months."

There is some positive spin here but this sounds like a meeting where people ask each other if there's any point in continuing.
