Tokyo's main index closes the day lower, surrendering early gains

  • Session high 21,679.20
  • Session low 21,211.53

The Nikkei closes near the lows for the day, giving up early gains (it was higher by 1.37% at one point) before the lunch break.

That has put a drag on USD/JPY as the pair fell to a low of 108.24 earlier, and is still trading near the lows at the moment at 108.29. And that's keeping the yen well-bid against the other major pairs as well.

The fall in the Nikkei so far hasn't really affected other equity markets in Asia though. The Hang Seng index is up by 1.64%, while China's Shanghai Composite and CSI 300 indices are up by 1.13% and 1.44% on the day.
