Says Putin:
- only way to deal with terrorists in Syria is to act pre-emptively
- if terrorists succeed in Syria they will come to Russia
- it is possible and needed to unit international efforts in combatting terrorism
- Russian engagement in Syria is temporary
US officials confirm the air strikes but say they don't appear to be targeting Islamic state-held areas
US-led coalition continues to fly in Syria despite Russian warning to clear airspace
