Its not just the Italian referendum this weekend, there is an election in Austria
Brexit, USA ... referendums and elections have been far from boring this past few months.
In the Italian referendum, if the 'yes' (to constitutional reform) vote loses PM Renzi says he will resign.
The Austrian election, says Bloomberg:
- offers a choice of two candidates from opposite ends of the political spectrum: Alexander Van der Bellen, a former Green Party leader standing as an independent; and Norbert Hofer of the anti-immigration Freedom Party
- the contest has exposed deep divisions within society given the stark ideological differences between the candidates on issues like Austria's place in the European Union and whether to welcome refugees or erect barriers against them.
Bolding mine. The result will have implications for EU solidarity going forward. Something to watch out for Monday.
