TOKYO (MNI) – New vehicle sales in Japan rose 33.5% from a year
earlier to 222,095 units in April, posting the ninth straight month of
year-on-year gains, backed by tax breaks for buying low emission
automobiles, data released by the Japan Automobile Dealers Association
on Thursday showed.

The increase followed a 37.2% rise in March. In August 2009,
domestic new vehicle sales rose 2.3%, posting their first y/y rise in 13
months.

In April passenger car sales rose 36.8% from a year earlier to
200,343 units (vs. +40.7% y/y in the previous month).

Truck sales rose 9.9% to 20,847 units, posting the third straight
y/y rise after rising 10.7% in March, while sales of buses fell 2.1% to
905 units, marking the first y/y drop in three months after a 2.3% rise
in the previous month.

Separately, the Japan Mini Vehicle Association reported that
domestic sales of new mini vehicles (with engine displacement of less
than 660 cc) rose by 10.8% in April from a year earlier (vs. +3.7% in
the previous month) to 130,370, posting the fourth consecutive month.

In January 2010, mini vehicle sales showed the first y/y rise in 15
months, up 0.7%.
