Monday they were writing about the oil spike as if it were the end of the world. It was a squeeze as the October contract rolled off the board. Tuesday they are construing the fact that Congressman and Senators are not doing back-flips at the prospects of lining up a $700 bln bank as a sign the pact is doomed. Most people don’t cheer before receiving a root canal or a colonoscopy either, but they are relieved when they are over and their problems are addressed. Politicians know bailouts are not popular but they further realize that the consequences of no bailout are potentially much more dire, especially 41 days ahead of election day. Fade the press. They benefit from chaos. The rest of us don’t.
