FRANKFURT (MNI) – The European Central Bank will discuss and think
“deeply” about the economic impact of the earthquake and tsunami in
Japan, ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet said Friday.
“The potential impact of the earthquake and its aftermath to both
the Japanese and world economy is something we will be thinking about
deeply in the coming days,” Trichet said in a speech here, noting that
he would discuss the situation with the Bank of Japan.
Moments earlier, asked by reporters about the ECB’s stance of
“strong vigilance” on inflation, Trichet said, “I stick to what I had
said before. I have nothing to add, nothing to withdraw, absolutely
nothing. No new message at all.”
