Trump hints that more tariffs are coming
Trump is tweeting about China:
"The Wall Street Journal has it wrong, we are under no pressure to make a deal with China, they are under pressure to make a deal with us. Our markets are surging, theirs are collapsing. We will soon be taking in Billions in Tariffs & making products at home. If we meet, we meet?"
He's referring to a WSJ story yesterday that Mnuchin had reached out to set up another meeting with China.
China's Commerce Minister confirmed it received the invitation but after this tweet from Trump, you have to wonder how much there is to negotiate.
"Chinese officials said they have grown wary of the Trump administration's unpredictable decision-making process and may be hesitant to accept without a clear sign U.S. negotiators have authority to speak for the president," the original report said.
This latest tweet underscores that concern.
The thinking at the moment is that Trump had planned to announce the tariffs this week (with a future implementation date) but that those plans were delayed by preparations for Hurricane Florence.
