U.S. officials seeking a China trade deal are focused on long-term changes to that nation's economy. But President Donald Trump is set on reducing the trade deficit, and is pushing his negotiators to get China to agree to purchase more goods, according to two people briefed on discussions.

This is going to lead to a breakthrough if true. China doesn't mind spending but it doesn't want to make the structural changes that Lighthizer is pushing.

China has already pledged to purchase $1.2 trillion in US goods but Trump wants them to 'double or triple' it and has renewed the call in recent weeks, according to the report.
