LONDON (MNI) – August mortgage approvals rose to their highest
levels since May last year, according to the latest British Bankers’
Association data.
The number of approvals for house purchases in August climbed to
35,226 from 33,734 in July, the highest outturn since the 36,373
recorded in May 2010.
August remortgaging approvals rose to 27,114 from 26,229 in July,
the highest level since July 2009.
There has been a clear pick-up in mortgage approvals in recent
months, with lending rates at all time lows on many deals.
David Dooks, statistics director at the BBA, said “The banks’ new
mortgage lending has ticked up in the past couple of months with higher
buy-to-let demand, and some business sectors are edging towards
year-on-year borrowing growth, although the general landscape is one of
households not wanting to take on more borrowing.”
