Reported sales picked up in April but the Confederation
of British Industry downplayed the rise, highlighting the deteriorating
underlying sales trend and noting retailers reported were poor for the
time of year. The CBI survey was conducted between March 30 and April 13
and, therefore, predates the end month bank holidays. The headline
reported sales balance rose to 21% in April from 15% in March.
