Disturbing news just breaking on the BBC that Pauline Cafferkey, the UK nurse being treated for Ebola after returning from Sierra Leone, is now in a critical condition according to a statement released by London’s Royal Free Hospital

Ms Cafferkey has been receiving an experimental anti-viral drug and blood from survivors of the disease but her condition had gradually deteriorated over the past two days.

She had been working in Sierra Leone as part of a Save the Children team and travelled home in December via Casablanca, Morocco, and London’s Heathrow Airport. She was screened for the disease at Heathrow and told officials she believed a fever might be developing but her temperature was taken seven times in total and was normal each time, so she was allowed to fly home to Scotland.

Sad news and indeed a concern in wider terms. Our thoughts are with Ms Cafferkey and her family and friends. Going to help fight the Ebola outbreak is a brave and selfless thing to do.
