The highly publicised event, watched by 7m viewers, was more game-show than a debate and was unlikely to impact on the pound directly but it's all part of the process and adds to the political uncertainty especially in wake of the growth in support for the smaller parties likely to hold a balance of power
A YouGov survey found that Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish National Party leader, was the "victor" in the debate, with 28% of the public vote. Nigel Farage (UKIP) came second with 20% as he won plaudits for attacking Mr Cameron and Mr Miliband over immigration and their plans for the economy.
In a blow to his electoral ambitions, Mr Miliband (Labour) came 4th and Sturgeon's "victory" coupled with his weak performance (just 14.8% of the vote) will increase fears that he will be forced to rely on her after the election. Current PM David Cameron stuck to his "stick with us" message but also came under a bit of fire from the hecklers
