Results published earlier this morning show the opposition Labour Party comfortably holding onto their parliamentary seat in Wythenshawe and Sale, in the north of England.
No great shock but a point of note was the anti-EU party UKIP beating the ruling coalition parties to 2nd place.
Analysts had been closely monitoring the performance of UKIP, which has come second in several by-elections in recent months, for clues to its national level of support ahead of the European Parliament elections in May.
