Comments by UK prime minister Theresa May

  • Will come back to parliament to update on the outcome
  • There needs to be a backstop as an insurance policy
  • Neither side wants to be in a backstop
  • Any backstop has to be temporary

May is speaking at the Commons now. Her comments on the backstop there is at least now escalating tensions as a call for a temporary backstop is what parliament wants, but I don't see how that would've actually went down well with European officials yesterday. We'll have to wait for more details before being able to scrutinise this further but on the surface, she's not giving anything away just yet.

We're also hearing from Labour party head Jeremy Corbyn as per below:

  • Brexit deal breaches government's own red lines
  • Calls Brexit deal a 'botched deal'
