A piece in the UK Times on COVID-19 and more from the UK

  • A senior figure in No 10 has privately suggested: "We are prepared to walk away."David Frost, Johnson's chief negotiator, told cabinet on Thursday that Brussels was now "absolutely clear that we will not extend" the transition period beyond December 31 - a decision that under EU law has to be taken in June.
  • Officials in the Cabinet Office and other departments who had been sequestered to work on the Covid-19 crisis have quietly returned to preparing for Brexit without a trade deal.
Separately:
  • A leaked Treasury document, which put this year's deficit at £337bn,
  • There is anxiety in the Treasury that the prime minister's team seems to believe most of the costs can be borne by borrowing.
The article does not appear to be gated, unusual for The Times, link.
