WASHINGTON (MNI) – U.S. consumer sentiment rose in early December
according to the preliminary reading of the Reuters/University of
Michigan Consumer Sentiment data released Friday.

The index came in at 74.2 — above median expectations of 72.2 —
after 71.6 in November and 67.7 in October.

The index’s preliminary reading for current conditions was reported
at 85.7 for December, vs. 82.1 in the November, and 76.6 in October.
Expectations rose to 66.8 vs. 64.8 reported last month.

December’s preliminary 1-year inflation expectations by consumers
was 2.9%, down from November’s final expectation of 3.0%. Five-year
inflation expectations also fell, 2.7% vs 2.8% last month.
