Comment from Mexico's foreign minister

Donald Trump hinted at a part of the deal with Mexico that wasn't announced in a series of tweets yesterday:

Importantly, some things not mentioned in yesterday press release, one in particular, were agreed upon. That will be announced at the appropriate time.

Now Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard says that if the US-Mexico deal doesn't reduce migration in 90 days, the countries agreed on a larger dialogue that will include Brazil, Panama and other central American countries to distribute the migrants. Ebrard said this is the unreleased part of the deal.

This is basically a Mexican commitment to review the broader framework but changing it would need the approval of the Mexican senate.

More from the New York Times.

The more I read about this deal, the more hollow it sounds. If that's the case, the entire things looks more and more like a PR exercise in favor of tariffs combined with a bit of political theater to make Trump look tougher on the border. Listening to him today on CNBC made me realize that he truly is Tariff Man.
