BERLIN (MNI) – German President Christian Wulff on Friday announced
his resignation after state prosecutors asked parliament to end his
legal immunity over accusations he accepted wrongful privileges.
The role of the German president is mainly ceremonial.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that she will approach
the opposition parties to find a presidential candidate which is
acceptable for all sides.
Merkel cancelled her trip to Rome today where she was to meet the
Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti.
