WASHINGTON (MNI) – There were 39,358 layoff intentions announced in
June, a 1.4% increase from 38,810 in May, but down sharply from the
74,393 job cuts announced in June 2009, job placement firm Challenger,
Gray and Christmas, Inc. said in a report released Wednesday. The data
are not seasonally adjusted.
Layoffs in June were led by computer firms, which reported
9,085 job reductions in the month.
“While some may question the sustainability of this recovery, the
dramatic decline in planned layoffs over the past six months certainly
suggests that the nation’s employers are not anticipating a double-dip
recession,” said John Challenger, chief executive officer of Challenger,
Gray & Christmas.
“With the exception of organizations in the government and
non-profit sector, employers are looking six months ahead and apparently
do not see a reason to make additional reductions in payrolls,” he
added.
In other data released, hiring intentions fell to 11,732 in June
from 14,922 in May. June hiring plans were led by the transportation
sector.
