US DATA: June housing starts +14.6% to 629k after May was rev down
2%, but permits +2.5% to 624k, suggesting continuing strength. Starts
strength was across categories as singles +9.4% and 5+ units +31.8%, and
across regions. Permits were more mixed, with weakness in the NE and in
1-fams in the West (-1.2%). Overall, the data show recovery in housing
except for the NE. There were 535k completions and 419k units under
construction during the month, hardly the robust housing mkt that was in
effect early in the century, but enough to keep construction moving.
