US Deputy State Secretary says the US will continue o engage with Chinese officials

Speaking from Tokyo, adds that the US will engage with China when it is in US interests, and in a direct manner.

China rebuffed US requests for a high level meeting earlier this week.

Relations between the two countries are not overly warm at present. The US sanctioned some Chinese officials over Hong Kong matters late last week.
