WASHINGTON (MNI) – The following is the commentary from the
ICSC-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Sales Snapshot released Tuesday:
As it has been throughout the month, weather once again played a
roll into retail sales results as September ended on a softer note for
retailers this past week. As a result, for the week ending October 2,
weekly retail sales declined slightly by 0.8 percent, according to the
ICSC and Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Sales Index. On a
year-over-year basis, retail sales, which faced a tough year-over-year
comparison, slowed to 2.4 percent.
“Overall sales finished the month on the soft side battered by
tough comparisons with last year’s week when weather was far more
favorable for fall merchandise,” said Michael Niemira, ICSC director of
research and chief economist. “As a whole, September sales are now
expected to come in between 2.5 and 3.0 percent, industry-wide,” Niemira
added.
Please note that ICSC will be releasing monthly retail sales
figures for September on Thursday, October 7, 2010.
