FRANKFURT (MNI) – The US government is no longer fundamentally
opposed to increasing the resources of the International Monetary Fund
to allow it to play a greater role in helping Greece out of its
financial problems, provided Europe makes further progress in overcoming
its sovereign debt crisis, the German business daily Handelsblatt said
Thursday, citing sources in the negotiations.
During her talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday,
IMF Director Christine Lagarde stressed that alongside private
creditors, public creditors should also provide a further contribution
to Greece’s bailout, the newspaper reported.
Due to the severe recession in Greece, the second bailout package
will not be enough to reduce the country’s debt burden to 120% of GDP by
2020, Handelsblatt said, citing IMF estimates of a “significant
double-digit billion” shortfall.
