WASHINGTON (MNI) – The following is the text of the weekly retail
sales report released by Johnson Redbook Tuesday, for the month-to-date
through the week-ended June 16:
The Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index was up 2.4% in the third
week of June following a 2.0% gain the prior week. Month-to-date, June
was up 2.5% compared to June of last year (relative to a target of a
2.9% gain). Month-over-month showed a 0.5% gain (relative to a target of
a 0.9% gain). June is a five-week month on the retail calendar ending on
June 30th
Business recovered in the third week of June, but not as much as
hoped for. Father’s Day promotions brought people into stores and drove
up traffic producing positive spill over business in other areas. For
the week, sales of men’s apparel, tools and other typical gift
categories were brisk as expected. With warmer weather across much of
the country, sales of seasonal merchandise such as swimwear, fans and
air conditioners as well as patio furniture continued to improve.
