WASHINGTON (MNI) – The value of new factory orders rose 0.3% in
September, as nondurable goods orders surged 1.0% and the previously
reported 0.8% decline in durable goods orders was revised up to a 0.6%
decline, data released by the Commerce Department Thursday morning
showed.
Total factory orders excluding transportation rose 1.3% in
September, the largest monthly gains since March that reflects gains in
a variety of durables components.
Analysts in a Market News International survey had expected overall
factory new orders to fall 0.2% in September, but it appears that
nondurables rose more than expected with a 1.0% increase.
The rise in nondurables orders was led by a 3.5% increase in
petroleum and coal products. Nondurables shipments are equivalent to
orders in this report.
Transportation orders are now reported down 7.1% in the month,
compared with the previously reported 7.5% decline. A Market News
International calculation shows durable goods orders excluding
transportation now stands up 1.8%, slightly better than the 1.7% rise in
the advance estimate.
Overall factory shipments rose 0.3% in the month, but nondefense
capital goods shipments fell 1.0% and were down 0.9% excluding the
aircraft component.
Factory inventories rose 0.1% in September, keeping the inventory
to shipments ratio at 1.33, unchanged from August.
Unfilled orders rose 0.9% for the third straight month.
