PARIS (MNI)- The next summit meeting of European Union heads of
state and government will take place at the end of January or the
beginning of February, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said
Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels, Van Rompuy said the
agenda for that summit will include the implementation steps for a
fiscal compact and intergovernmental treaty agreed to by most EU leaders
last week.

Van Rompuy said that the meeting will also focus on economic
issues, including competitiveness and employment.

“In times of stagnation and quasi-recession, it is very important
to have those topics on the agenda and not only speak of fiscal
consolidaton,” he said.
