Chief whip says government could re-open deal

The next move in the Brexit playbook might be for Parliament to vote for a legally-binding sunset clause in the Brexit backstop deal. This would anger the EU but would bring them back to the negotiating table; or at least that's what chief Conservative whip Julian Smith has been telling MPs.

At one meeting, Smith asked MPs if they would support an amendment in the name of 1922 committee chairman Graham Brady, which says they would back a deal if the backstop is "replaced with alternative arrangements to avoid a hard border", according to a source familiar with the discussion.

The pound is getting a bit of a lift from the report but had already sniffed out workable changes to a deal.
