There was some talk earlier today that the President could use the 14th amendment to raise the debt ceiling without Congress. If Obama acted unilaterally to raise the debt ceiling, it would not be taken seriously by the world’s financial markets- White House spokesman.
I don’t get this. I don’t think the markets care who signs the bill as long as the US pays its debts.
Separately, a senior House Republican says lawmakers will not force a government shutdown. He provided no further details.
