Dow ends a touch higher on the day

The Nasdaq stocks took it on the chin as flows exited the tech stocks and at least kept the Dow stocks steady. The S&P was also lower, but held up relative to the tech heavy Nasdaq index.

The final numbers:

  • S&P index fell -8.12 points or -0.28% at 2888.60
  • Nasdaq fell -96.07 points or -1.19% at 7998.17
  • Dow rose 22.51 points or 0.09% at 25974

Twitter was a big loser falling -6.06% on the day. Facebook fell -2.33%. Jack Dorsey of Twitter and Sheryl Sandberg testified to Senate Intelligence Committee on meddling in the 2016 U.S. election. The testimony highlights the dilemma that social media sites have in controlling what goes on, on social media and the costs to stop it all. Controlling "free speech" is not an easy thing.

The fall in their stocks dragged other tech stocks lower.
