BERLIN (MNI) – German consumer prices in November rose 0.1% both in
national and in EU-harmonized terms, with annual rates standing at +1.5%
for CPI and +1.6% for HICP, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO)
estimated Friday.

Both monthly figures exceeded the median forecasts in a MNI survey
of analysts, which called for a 0.1% monthly drop of both CPI and HICP.

As usual, the Federal Statistics Office provided few details on
price developments with the flash release. It pointed to data from
reporting states that showed that price developments were
“significantly” determined by strong increases in light heating oil,
motor fuels as well as fruits and vegetables.

Despite the ongoing economic recovery, German economic activity is
still well below pre-recession levels, analysts note. Underlying
inflation pressure will likely remain subdued for the time being, they
predict.

Given slowing global demand and increasing fiscal tightening, the
German recovery is set to moderate. Remaining spare capacity is, thus,
seen keeping core inflation down.

The stats office will release the detailed results on December 9,
the release said.
