BRUSSELS (MNI) – The meeting of Eurozone finance ministers that
concluded early Wednesday morning made progress on the question of
Greece’s debt but did not arrive at a comprehensive decision, IMF
Managing Director Christine Lagarde told reporters in brief comments as
she left.

“We’re closing the gap but we’re not quite there yet, so it’s
progress but we have to do a bit more,” Lagarde said.

Pressed on what was left to do, she said merely, “A bit more work.”

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, who also spoke briefly
with reporters as he left, confirmed the absence of a definitive
conclusion to the meeting.

He said that ministers had engaged in an “intensive” discussion,
“but because the questions are so complicated we did not reach a
conclusive solution and therefore we will meet again on Monday.”

Schaeuble said the Eurogroup had managed to decide on “an improved
control mechanism” for monitoring developments in Greece.
