Magnitude 7.6 earthquake hits 331 miles east-north-east of Tokyo. The depth of the quake was 34.4 miles and there may potentially be a tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The yen is higher on risk aversion.

Update: The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there is no widespread tsunami threat. We breath a sigh of relief.

Update 2: A ‘yellow’ warning of a 1-meter tsunami has been issued and is due to hit the coast at 43-minutes past the hour (2:43 am Tokyo time)

For comparison the earthquake that caused the Fukushima disaster was a magnitude 9.0 with a 40-meter tsunami.
