Russia has told Ukraine that Russia is ready for gas negotiations but will only start discussions after Kiev pay up their outstanding Gazprom debt.
Anatoly Yanovsky also announced that a Gazprom deal to supply gas to China is 98% ready.
The Gazprom/Chinese deal has been ongoing for a while and that would potentially cover any fall out from further souring relations with the West if they decided to switch the taps off.
