In potentially positive news for consumer spending in Japan, the Nikkei reports on a preliminary survey results showing average summer bonuses for workers are up 5.92% on the year. It goes on to say that:

  • Manufacturers, in particular, are handing out more as they reap higher earnings, thanks partly to the weaker yen
  • With labor in short supply, retailers and food service companies are stepping up efforts to attract and retain employees. Department stores and supermarkets are hiking bonuses by 3.92%
