From the Nikkei – Japan, China trying to lay groundwork for summit

  • The Japanese and Chinese foreign ministers are looking to hold informal talks next weekend to try paving the way for a meeting between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Xi Jinping
  • Foreign affairs chiefs from the two sides have not met formally since 2012. Nor do Fumio Kishida and Wang Yi plan to at the Asean Regional Forum this coming Sunday. Rather, they will seek “an opportunity to exchange words,” according to a Chinese foreign ministry source.
