Reports circulated earlier that Donetsk people’s republic leader Alexander Borodai would resign and that’s proven true. He’s Russian and will surely head home as soon as possible as Kiev inches closer to downtown Donetsk. He will be replaced by Alexander Zakharchenko, who is a Ukrainian native.

The person who is really in charge is Igor Girkin, better know as Igor Strelkov, who commands the military wing.

The move to put a Ukrainian in charge could be aimed at quelling speculation that Moscow is running the rebellion. Zakharchenko could also signal a more militant shift, he heads a heavily armed rebel unit called Oplot.
