tobacco (+2.3%) and the machinery, equipment and supplies (+1.4%)
subsectors. In volume terms sales +0.5%. Inventories +0.8% after +1.2%
in July, with motor vehicles industry (+8.7%) leading the gain.
Inv-to-sales ratio was unchanged at 1.24.

CANADA DATA: Aug EI initial and renewal claims -1.3% to 229,400. Number
of people receiving EI benefits +3.2% (16,400) in Aug, bringing total to
534,400 people.
