Tokyo's main index closes lower on the day

A relatively slow trading day in Tokyo sees the Nikkei close lower for a third straight day. The declines today are once again led by the consumer staples sector.
The rest of Asian equities are mostly higher with modest gains - following a vote of confidence by Wall Street as US stocks closed with record gains once again in yesterday's trading.
The Hang Seng index is up 0.52%, Kospi is up by 0.20%, CSI 300 is up by 0.07%, while the Shanghai Composite index is down by 0.08%. Earlier, Australia's ASX 200 closed the day higher by 0.04% at 6,070.10.
