Tokyo's main index closes higher on the day, still shy of 23,000

Energy stocks are the lead gainers on the day in the Nikkei as oil prices and commodities are closing the year on a firmer note. Meanwhile, most equity markets in Asia are also doing relatively decent - the Hang Seng index is up by 0.16% and the Kospi is up by 0.11%.
Chinese markets aren't faring too well though with the CSI 300 index down by 1.13% and the Shanghai Composite index down by 0.61%.
