5 suggestions from the WSJ

The WSJ is out with 5 things you can do to protect your finances from the Equifax data breach.

In short:

  1. Check credit report. You can see free reports from creditreport.com
  2. Consider a credit freeze. This will prevent new lines of credit from being issued
  3. Check bank statements and credit card statements
  4. Take the credit monitoring offered at www.equifaxsecurity2017.com. It begs the question why trust the agency that was already compromised but it might be better than nothing.
  5. Visit the identity theft resource center. If you have been a victim of identity theft, you can learn more about ways to protect yourself at www.idtheftcenter.org.

I have to think, the credit companies will be tightening things up for you. It behooves them to not have the onslaught of claims.

For those leaving Florida, it might be worthwhile to get a bunch of cash. With the data breach, I have to think banks will be unauthorizing credit card transactions outside your normal spending area. So take cash just in case.

I might add a 6th suggestion:

6. Cross your fingers.
